
This class introduces children to the basic elements of storytelling with creativity and imagination. By writing exercises and reading popular children's fairy tales, students will learn the basic structure of a story: beginning, middle and end, as well as the importance of characters in a story. The class will include writing drills and will culminate in a project: each student will write a personal fairy tale and design the book cover, a keepsake they can cherish forever.
Students will start with some drawing basics like anatomy, gesture, facial expression, & environment; then expand & combine these ideas with an imaginative approach to create their own characters that can be used in comics, animation, children's books, & other forms of cartooning.
Children experiment with various drawing, painting, & mixed media materials & methods, develop their art-making skills while focusing on individuality & self-expression. Students will be creating personal picture frames, decorating flower pots, perlor beads, coffee can banks, bookmarks, polymer clay, etc.
Children will have fun learning techniques for creating their own jewelry. Through this 4 week session students will learn to make several different pieces of jewelry. Students will leave each class with at least one finished piece of jewelry.
Favorite children's books will be our inspiration as we experiment with various materials & techniques. Projects will include cityscapes, fun faces & animals.
Art history will be our inspiration as we explore: line, shape, color, pattern, space, form, etc. Projects such as drawing, watercolor, collage & printmaking will illustrate these new concepts to our young artists.

Screen printing is a fun process used to print designs on t-shirts & clothing as well as paper, plastics, glass, metals, etc. In this 4 week class you will learn how to go from concept to a finished print. You will learn about the ways to make your films, how to make screens, then how to manually print your design on your choice of materials. Please come to the first class with at least an idea of what you would like to print,. A one color design is preferred.
This class with focus on teaching about the basic materials & techniques of oil painting. The class will begin by teaching the how to prepare a canvass by showing stretching & gessoing techniques. Art History will direct the class towards different techniques, from the glaze painting of the Renaissance to the expressionistic painting of Abstract Expressionism. This class is perfect for any adult interested in learning the essentials of oil painting. A materials list will be provided upon registration.
This is a call for anyone who ever wanted to dry drawing and painting, but didn't know where to begin. Explore the principles of design & the elements of art through art projects presented in easy to understand step-by-step instruction. This class celebrates the joy of outdoors observational drawing. Artists throughout history have always been inspired by ourdoor or plein air (term coined by the French, meaning in the open air). As a class we will visit four different sites within walking distance in the Port Richmond area. We will be working primarily outdoors (weather permitting) and will be enjoying the sun, wind, and other elements that may come our way. Bring your favorite drawing and painting medium and come join us as we venture as artists into the urban jungle of Philadelphia.
Figure Drawing
Learn the basics of anatomical figure drawing. Basics of drawing will be reviewed including gesture & inplied movement, facial features, profiles & full figure views. This course focuses on analytical seeing & methods for translating the visual experience of the figure into a complete drawing. Bring a 24" x 36" drawing pad, pencil, charcoal, eraser & open mind to the first class.
This class will focus on learning new techniques for creating your own jewelry. We will be working with beading string, chain, and head &eye pins. Students will learn to make earrings, bracelets, & necklaces through this 4 week session. Students will leave each class with at least one finished piece of jewelry.
In this class we'll use old magazines, found objects, paper, & drawing materials to create unique works of art. We'll use an array of strange, exciting materials like buttons, fabrics & more to create small & large scale works. Feel free to bring in photos & magazines from home. Additional materials fees may apply, inquire upon registration.
This class will combine bookbinding and printmaking techniques to explore different forms of books as art objects. Books can be used both for their structure and their story. We will discuss the process of telling a story and some of teh history and uses of books. Books offer the possibility of rapid mass-production and distribution as well as intimate one-of-a-kind artwork. Students will bind their own sketchbooks, make handmade paper, and create altered and handmade books.
In this class students will begin making mosaic works of art from day one! No prior experience necessary. Using various ceramic & glass tiles,broken dishes,mirror,river rocks,etc. students will create mosaics on objects of different shapes & sizes including but not limited to: boxes, mirror frames, earthen pots,a piece furniture of the students choice. At course end students will feel confident using the materials & tools of the trade & be ready to tackle projects independently!
Imagine beaing able to layout professional-looking invitations, websites, logos, brochures, you name it! This class will give you the basic foundation you need to design quality projects for yourself, for friends & family or for your business. This class is a foundational course & therefore no materials (laptop or software programs) are needed as a prerequisite. However, if you have a laptop & either Adobe Illustrator/InDesign and/or Quark Xpress, feel free to bring them along for more in-depth help. You will learn the language of design, basic design principles, such as typography & layout, as well as the skills to set up a file to send to a professional printer.
Learn how to trace a pattern, cut, grind, foil glass & the proper way to solder. By the end of this class students will have the basic skills to craft stained glass & a finished project to show for it.
Ever wanted to learn how to knit, but don't know where to begin? This course will teach the basic fundamentals of knit, purl & casting-on in the round. Students have a choice to learn how to construct a ribbed hat using circular & double pointed needles or a scarf. Prior experience is not necessary. Beginners to advanced welcome! Students may also bring their own more advanced pattern (sweater, socks, mittens etc.) and technical assistance will be provided throughout the course. This class is designed to help people learn how to take better pictures with the equipment they already have. Classes will consist of shooting outside, & doing indoor still-lifes & portraits. We will not be doing any darkroom work or developing, so students should be able to get their pictures developed or downloaded onto a computer & printed for each class session.
Required Materials: Camera-digital or film,SLR or point & shoot & have a working knowledge of its controls. Tripod should be brought if they own one.
Classes mostly take place outside and focus on the manual functions of cameras, including proper flash use. Constructive critique is also a class component. After this class, students will have the building blocks to advance their vision because of their greater skill level.

This course is for the more advanced photographer. Classes are devoted to the history of photojournalism, as well as examining examples of modern and multimedia photojournalism, ethics in the digital age, and story ideas. The majority of the time will be spent on constructive critiques. After this class, students will have greater skill and a greater sense of responsibility in documenting how people live, work, and play.

Come explore the exciting drawing mediums of gouache & ink. Learn cool pen & ink techniques like stippling & cross hatching. The class will investigate the various techniques by means of drawing from life. This will include drawing from a live model, still lives & with weather permitting their will be excursions outside. This class is great for teens or adults interested expanding their knowledge of drawing techniques. A materials list will be provided upon registration.

This class investigates the shift from representation to abstraction, through the art of drawing. A variety of drawing mediums will be used including: ink, charcoal, & conte crayon. The class will be drawing from life, from memories, from photographs, & from various types of music. All senses will be used in this investigation, as the class translates what is heard & felt into an image that can be seen. This is a great class for anyone that is interested in expanding upon their drawing skills & learning to develop their own style. A materials list will be provided upon registration.

This class is for students with the desire to perform or play music with others. Students should already be at an intermediate or advanced level, and be able to work with others and take direction well. When enrolled, students will bring their specific skill set to a group of other musicians and begin practicing and performing music as a group.
